Situated on the outskirts of the emerging foodie neighborhood of Mt. Vernon/Shaw, The Bird has a poultry-focused menu, ranging from the classics to the more adventurous, including Duck Meatballs and Grilled Peri-Peri Cornish Hen. The eatery also offers a popular weekend brunch served from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. with a range of egg and breakfast meat dishes. Order the Buttermilk Chicken & Waffles, consisting of organic boneless chicken thighs, buttermilk waffles, and maple syrup. Another must-try is the Duck Egg Chilaquiles with crispy tortillas, tomatillo sauce, queso fresco, and a sunny duck egg. Be sure to also check out their Happy Hour served 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. for small bites and discounted craft cocktails.
The two-story building is broken down into seasonal sections where the art reflects summer, fall, winter, and spring. The restaurant sticks with the bird theme throughout the décor, including photos of chickens from EatWellDC’s own farm and bird cage light fixtures.
