The Smithsonian Institution museum network is one of the most famous attractions in Washington D.C. and the entire country. Made up of 19 different museums spread throughout Washington D.C. and New York City, nine research centers and countless affiliates, the Smithsonian Institution is the world’s largest museum and research complex.

One of the most popular elements of the Smithsonian network of museums is the admission price: all museums are open to the public free of cost! Learn about the history of American Indians, stroll through that National Zoo, take a look at figure heads and modern art at the Portrait Gallery, or visit the latest addition to the museum, the African American History and Culture Museum. The Smithsonian Visitors’ Center is housed within the iconic castle building, which was built in 1855. The castle is a museum in itself, with exhibits going into the architecture of the building and delving into the depths of all the network of museums has to offer.
